CEO/ED Evaluation
We recently assisted the Board of a major Canadian United Way organization to develop their CEO Performance Evaluation tool and process. Fortunately, the task was linked to a comprehensive process that looked at monitoring and measuring organizational progress toward overall strategic goals.
The online resources identified through the Diigo link below remind us that:
- it is unwise to evaluate your CEO or Executive Director solely based on how the organization is doing – there are too many factors that are simply outside the control of your key staff member
- the financial bottom line may be the critical success factor in the private sector, but it is much more complex in non-profit organizations
- not everthing that can be measured is important and what is most important is often the most difficult to quanitify
- care must be taken to ensure objectivity, particularly when careers are involved – your assessment must be defensable.
